Cycling technique is more than just bike handling, gear selection and riding in a bunch. As your feet are held in the pedal while cycling however, differences in pedaling technique are often overlooked unlike swimming and running technique where it is more obvious.
The pedal cycle can be divided broadly in to four stages describing how the pedal is moving relative to the bottom bracket so forward, downward, backward and upward. If the pedal action is to be continuous then the direction of force applied needs to constantly change as does muscle recruitment.
Understanding what you are trying to make your legs do is essential in becoming an efficient cyclist. In my next post I will go in to more detail about muscle recruitment and pedaling technique.
